Maximising Space in Apartment Living: Essential Tips for Effective Space Planning

Living in an apartment often requires creative thinking and strategic planning to make the most of your space. Whether you're in a cosy studio or a three-bedroom apartment, efficient space planning can transform your apartment into a comfortable, functional and stylish home. Here are some essential tips to help you maximise space in your apartment:

1. Multi-Functional Furniture

One of the best ways to maximise space is to invest in multi-functional furniture. Pieces that serve more than one purpose can help reduce clutter and make your apartment feel more spacious. Consider a sofa bed that can be used for seating during the day and as a visitor bed at night. Similarly, a coffee table with storage underneath or a dining table that doubles as a workspace can be incredibly useful.

2. Vertical Storage Solutions

When floor space is limited, think vertical. Utilise vertical storage solutions like tall bookshelves, wall-mounted shelves and hanging storage units. These not only free up floor space but also draw the eye upward, giving the illusion of higher ceilings and a larger room. In the kitchen, hanging pots and pans from a ceiling rack can save cabinet space, and in the living room, wall-mounted entertainment centres keep the floor clear.

3. Declutter Regularly

Clutter can make any space feel cramped and disorganised. Regularly declutter your apartment by getting rid of items you no longer need or use. Adopting a minimalist mindset can help you keep only the essentials and those items that bring you joy. Use baskets, bins and organisers to keep small items in check and maintain a tidy environment.

4. Use Mirrors Strategically

Mirrors can significantly enhance the sense of space in an apartment. Placing mirrors opposite windows reflects light and makes the room appear brighter and larger. A large, framed mirror on one wall can serve as a focal point while also creating the illusion of depth.

5. Opt for Light Colours

Light colours on walls, floors and furniture can make a room feel more open and airy. Neutral shades like white, beige and light grey can visually expand the space. Adding pops of colour through accessories, such as cushions, rugs and artwork, can create a balanced and inviting atmosphere without overwhelming the room.

6. Maximise Closet Space

Closet space is often at a premium in apartments. Maximise this space by using organisers, shelves, and hanging racks. Consider adding a second hanging rod or using cascading hangers to increase the amount of clothing you can store. Storage bins and boxes can help keep off-season items neatly tucked away.

7. Create Zones

In an open-plan apartment, creating distinct zones for different activities can help define the space and make it more functional. Use rugs, furniture arrangement and room dividers to delineate areas for sleeping, dining, and relaxing. This approach can make a small apartment feel more organised and spacious.

By implementing these space planning strategies, you can create a more efficient, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing living environment in your apartment. Thoughtful organisation and a few clever design choices can significantly enhance the functionality and feel of your home, no matter its size.

A design aesthetic that complements your lifestyle

Calm yet colourful. Vibrant and full of life. These aren’t just words that describe the atmosphere of Arklife Robertson Lane.

A design aesthetic that complements your lifestyle

Serene yet colourful. Vibrant and full of life. These aren’t just words that describe the atmosphere of Arklife Robertson Lane.

Each residence and communal space within Arklife Robertson Lane have been designed to reflect the individuality of our residents.

From the colour palette to the furniture selection and finishes – every small detail has been hand chosen to enhance the feeling of home – to creating a community where residents can truly connect, grow and belong.

Arklife Robertson Lane offers residents so much more than 3 and 2 bedroom units for rent in Brisbane. Guided by a design principal of ‘enticing comfort’, every furnished and unfurnished residence is homely yet modern in every aspect.

Spaces that “nurture and energise”

A collaborative design effort between Arklife, Interior Stylist and Designer Lee Accatino, and leading architectural firm Rothelowman, the colour palette chosen for Robertson Lane reflects the modern lifestyle that the community affords.

Within Arklife Robertson Lane’s 2 bedroom units for rent in Brisbane’s James St Precinct, you can expect to see a mix of neutrals, complemented by soft pastels and comforting cools.

Neutrals

Dulux ‘Ghosting’ and ‘Manorburn Double’ add contracting cool and warmth with tones that resemble stone and brick, bringing a raw yet refined feeling.

Soft yet colourful

Dulux ‘Calandre’ and Porter’s Paint ‘Hai Zakura’ add shades of blue to Arklife’s apartments, creating feelings of calmness and serenity. Often described as peaceful or tranquil, these modern takes on classic tones really bring Arklife’s kitchens to life.

Dulux ‘Silver Grass’ pairs perfectly with off-whites to instantly lift a space while still providing a subtle touch of nature-inspired hues. Inspired by the slender, fine grass often found in agriculture an other vegetation, ‘Silver Grass’ bring the outdoors into your home at Arklife.

Vibrancy and energy

The standout of the palette, Porter’s Paint ‘Nude’ adds vigour and warmth to the soft and neutral tones. From the bedroom to the living room, Arklife apartments embody the vibrancy of the James St Precinct.

Interior Stylist and Designer Lee Accatino said he wanted to reinforce the vision behind Arklife – to create, own and operate vibrant residential communities that enable residents to enhance the way they live.

“The inspiration draws on the diversity of New Farm, James St and the Valley where there is no one aesthetic, but more of an eclectic atmosphere,” Lee said.

“Must like taking time out in New Farm Park or getting out amongst the vibrant nightlife of Fortitude Valley, Arklife gives you these same options. You get to choose how you want to spend your time.

“The foundation of the colour palette complements this inspiration, with neutrals that create a sense of calm and colourful greens and blues that bring a modern edge to the scheme. But the true hero is the vibrancy and energy of ‘Nude’ by Porter’s Paint that bring the colour palette together.”

But it’s not just about the look. Arklife is all about putting residents first and providing all the conveniences, security and comforts of an urban community.

“My guiding principle for the project was to create a lively environment and a place each resident could call home,” Lee said.

“I wanted the Arklife experience to be engaging from the moment you step off the street into the Outdoor Garden Laneway, a charming sanctuary beyond the concrete and then into an environment that blurs the lines between design, lifestyle and aspiration.”
